Shelter Building Design: Brand Evolution & Website Rebuild
- Client: Shelter Building Design
- Services: Brand coordination, UX strategy, WordPress development, performance and visual refinement
Overview
Environmentarian has worked alongside Kirstie Wulf of Shelter Building Design for several years, maintaining and progressively improving shelterbuildingdesign.com.au. What began as a solid but conventional one-page WordPress site evolved, through patience, persistence and the right creative collaborators, into a fully realised brand and a high-performing website that finally reflects the quality and confidence of the practice behind it.

This project stands as a clear example of how thoughtful branding, applied with discipline and care, can transform a website from a digital placeholder into a genuine business asset.
The Starting Point
When Shelter first engaged Environmentarian, the website had a respectable foundation: clean, functional and professionally built. However, it lacked a coherent brand system. The original site design had been led by a developer rather than a designer, resulting in:
- A single-page layout with limited storytelling or SEO depth
- Visual decisions disconnected from the logo
- No consistent colour palette or brand logic
As we often say, websites are like gardens. They don’t just need maintenance; they need intention, energy, periodic reinvention and ongoing content if they are to grow and bear fruit.
The Long Road to Rebrand
From the outset, branding was part of the conversation, but like many small practices, time pressures meant progress was incremental. Over nearly two years, the idea of a rebrand was revisited, deferred, and reshaped.
Eventually, Environmentarian took the initiative to source and curate graphic designers best suited to Shelter’s values, aesthetic, and market position.
By this stage, Kirsty had already invested in a standout team photo shoot, set against the Blue Mountains and featuring bold, brightly coloured team shirts worn by Kirstie, Kirsten, and Kristina.
Those colours became the catalyst.
They formed the backbone of the new palette, while Shelter’s iconic Japanese hemp leaf symbol was retained and refined as a central brand motif, honouring the practice’s history while giving it new clarity and confidence.

The Creative Collaboration
Kate from Rove Creative emerged as the clear choice after early conversations and a review of prior work.
Kate and Kirstie engaged in a deep, considered branding process that delivered:
- A comprehensive branding board
- A redesigned logo system
- A full suite of brand assets
- Figma mock-ups for the desktop landing page and project pages
The result was not cosmetic, it was strategic. The brand finally had a visual language that could scale across digital and print, internal and external communications.
Bringing the Brand to Life Online
Bringing the Brand to Life Online
With the brand system in place, Environmentarian translated the design into a refined WordPress build, applying the new identity with discipline and consistency:
- A carefully implemented colour palette
- Custom iconography aligned with the brand
- Graphic-designed sections that guide users naturally down the page
- Clear project prioritisation and hierarchy
Subtle enhancements, including fixed background imagery and restrained micro-animations, add visual interest without distracting from Shelter’s work. The outcome is a high-level user experience that feels calm, confident, and intentional. The Brand Evolution & Website Rebuild for Shelter Building Design was complete for now.
The Result
While Shelter Building Design continues to roll out the new branding across internal and external documents, the website now leads the way, setting the standard for how the practice presents itself.
This project demonstrates what can happen when:
- Strategy is allowed time to mature
- The right creative partners are brought together
- Design is respected as a business tool, not decoration
For Environmentarian, it’s a strong example of our role not just as web developers, but as long-term digital partners, helping clients align brand, experience, and credibility over time.
