Applying for Joynton: A Second Shot at a Shared Creative Future

This is my second shot for a creative tenancy through the City of Sydney. The first (find info here), at William Street, ultimately went to a very deserving recipient, a result I fully respect, though I still feel like I’ve got more to offer.. So, I’m trying again, this time for a unique space at the Joynton Avenue Creative Centre (JACC) in Green Square, just 10mins bike ride from my rental home.

Below is a quick walkthrough of the idea I’ll submit. Studio Jacc. A hybrid meeting, podcast and media studio that could be shared by the JACC community and beyond.

This application is deeply personal, practical, and purpose-driven. The proposal – for a hybrid tech room and podcast/media studio – grows out of a genuine need I’ve seen across my own work, my networks, and the broader creative community: we’re lacking fit-for-purpose, low-barrier production space.

Currently, I work from my home in Redfern and access the excellent Impact Story Lab in Darlinghurst when I can. It’s great for meetings and creative collaboration, but it doesn’t meet the technical requirements of podcasting, video shooting, or editing support.

The proposed tenancy would allow Environmentarian, my social enterprise studio, to expand into a shared production and mentoring hub. Think of it as a “plug-and-play” creative suite. Where residents of JACC, local social enterprises, and purpose-led freelancers can book a hybrid meeting space, record a podcast, shoot a short-form video, or get help editing digital content they’re proud of. Affordable access, shared knowledge, and IRL collaboration…with online storytelling at its heart.

I’ve run creative spaces before, from warehouses to pop-up shops, and after reimagining my work life as a single dad, this feels like the right next step. It’s not just about growing my startup. It’s about offering something back to Sydney’s creative and community sectors, at a time when space and access are more needed than ever.
