Learn how real websites work by building your demo WordPress site in a guided 1 day session. In this hands-on workshop you’ll publish content and build systems so browsers can find the information they are looking for. You’ll walk away with the skills that will help you do impactful work that will scale over time to support your team, or build your own idea.

Basic Workshop Information

Starting with a warm welcome drink, we'll do an intro of digital infrastructures, have a few web dev sessions, breaks and chats. Then a chance to show your work and get some feedback. Participants will walk away with new skills, new friends and a beginner website they can keep working on or use their new skills to start a something bigger.

- Modern web browser (Chrome - preferred, Firefox, Safari)

Prerequisites

- A WordPress.com account (created during the workshop)

- Basic computer literacy

- A topic or idea you’d like to build a site around (business, blog, project, or cause)

What do we learn? Workshop Flow

Step 1: Understand how websites actually work

Learn the fundamentals of websites from a business and real-world perspective. This includes what websites are for, why content comes before design, and how WordPress structures information. Outcome: Clear mental model of pages, posts, and purpose.

Step 2: Create your WordPress account and explore the dashboard

Set up a WordPress.com account and get comfortable navigating the dashboard. Learn what each section does and which areas matter most. Outcome: Confidence logging in and moving around WordPress.

Step 3: Create real content before choosing a design

Build the foundations of your site by creating: Three blog posts A News / Blog page A Home page An About page (using WordPress’s built-in explainer as a reference) Outcome: A functioning content-first website structure.

Step 4: Set up navigation and site structure

Create menus, link pages together, and understand how visitors move through your site. Outcome: A site that makes sense to users, not just the owner.

Step 5: Choose a theme and refine the layout

Select a free WordPress theme and see how design responds to your existing content. Learn what themes control and what they don’t. Outcome: Design decisions grounded in content, not guesswork.

Step 6: Present your site and plan next steps

Share a short walkthrough of what you’ve built, reflect on what you’ve learned, and understand the difference between today’s prototype and a professional production website. Outcome: Confidence, clarity, and a clear path forward.
