Step 3: Choose a Business Name
Your business name is part of your brand, so take the time and choose wisely. Ensure it’s available as a business name in Australia and a matching or very similar domain name (for your website) is also available. It can be unique and reflective of what you do or something more generic which may make it adaptable to future business directions.
Note:
- If you use your own name as a business name, clients may prefer to deal only with you, which could limit scalability.
- Using a very specific name like “Metric Mowing” might limit your ability to expand into other services like yard work.
- Consider using the new Australia-specific domain extension, .au, for your website.
Business name + Domain name = Branding
Register with Government Authorities
Start thinking about your business structure. Will you be a sole trader with an ABN (Australian Business Number), or will you establish a company with an ACN (Australian Company Number)? Partnerships can be tricky and often don’t last long, so consider other options. It’s a good idea to talk to an accountant or business professional for advice.
Steps:
- Apply for an ABN or ACN.
- Register your business name and associate it with your ABN/ACN.
- Purchase your domain name.
- Create professional email accounts like info@yourbusiness.com, john@yourbusiness.com, and accounts@yourbusiness.com to start.

Licences and Permits
Determine what licences or permits your business might require and obtain them. While some trades require specific licences, others, like painting, tiling, or yard work, do not. You can start small and gradually grow your services while getting certified in the background.
